ZOYSIAGRASS

TURF SPECIFICATIONS

CHARACTERISTICS:

Warm - season grass - leaf texture from fine to medium coarse, sometime sharp to the touch - color ranges from bright to dark green - forms a dense, low maintenance lawn - spreads by stolons and rhizomes - growth rate is slow, some faster growing varieties are now available.

RECOMMENDED USAGE:

Hot, humid and tropical climates, also hot and arid regions - can withstand very heavy usage - recommended for residential and commercial sites.

TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE:

Tolerates heat exceptionally well - subject to winter dormancy, but has the best overall cold tolerance of any warm - season turfgrass.

DROUGHT TOLERANCE:

Moderate - remains green and resists short periods of drought - takes both heat and drought as well or better than any other grass.

SHADE TOLERANCE:

Fair - slow growing in partial shade but much better than some warm -- season grasses.

WEAR RESISTANCE:

Excellent - exceptionally hardy, has best wear resistance of any grass - toleraters heavy traffic  - new varities have faster growth, recovering more rapidly from severe injury.

  • MAINTENANCE

Taking good care of your lawn often requires no more work overall than taking poor care of it.  A lawn that is properly watered, fertilized and mowed has far fewer problems with weeds, diseases and insects.  A well kept lawn also remains lush and attractive giving you much more enjoyment.

    WATER NEEDS:
Low to medium - water deeply, at least 1 inch per application, every 5-7 days in hot, dry weather.  The new types of zoysiagrass handle heat and drought especially well.

    MOWING & THATCHING:
Slow growth rate reduces mowing frequency - mow at 3/4 to 1 1/2 inches with a reel or rotart mower.  This is one of the few warm-season grasses that is manageable with a rotart mower.  Clippings of zoysiagrass contribute to thatch build-up and shoud be removed - periodic vertical mowing is needed to  control thatch accumulation.

    SOIL & FERTILIZER NEEDS:

Tolerates high salinity and infertile soil relatively well - very low fertilizer requirements.  Recommend 5-7 lbs, of 16-4-8 or 14-4-14 (with slow release nitrogen) per 1,000 eq. ft. every other month followed by 4 lbs. per 1,000 eq. ft. of 6-0-24 in September.

    DISEASE, WEED, & INSECT CONTROL:

Very highly resistant to serious turf diseases - has good insect resistance, new varieties have been developed with improved pest tolerance.  Dense turf produced by zoysiagrass prevents most weeds from appearing.

All information is based on average/normal conditions; individual sites and situations may differ.  Therefore, contact your local nurseryman or county Extension Office if more detailed information is needed on specific maintenance questions.
